It is not enough to focus on internal preservation. Institutions must link arms and make clear that attacks on one are attacks on all. When the judiciary is slandered, the press must speak out. When the press is demonized, educators must lend their voice. When science is ridiculed, lawyers and religious leaders alike must come to its defense.
This will require courage. It will require abandoning the false comfort of appeasement and embracing solidarity. It will require facing down threats and smears and continuing to speak truthfully, even when the truth is unpopular or dangerous.
But the alternative is far worse. If the forces of reason, compassion, and justice do not unite, they will be dismantled piece by piece. Institutions that were painstakingly built over generations will be dismantled in years or even months.

This is not speculation. It is already happening. The institutions that once protected the weak from the strong are being hollowed out. The language of democracy is being used to mask authoritarian intent. Symbols of patriotism are being wielded to attack the very freedoms they are supposed to represent.
